Shockwave Therapy / EPAT Q & A

What is shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave (ESW) or Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment (EPAT), involves using pressure waves to increase blood flow to the treatment area. This increase in blood flow to soft tissues accelerates your body’s natural healing process, without needing surgery. Over time, cells and tissues regenerate, often making the treated area stronger than it was in the first place.

Treatments are entirely non-invasive, requiring your practitioner to simply glide a handheld device over your skin. Not only are EPAT therapies painless, but many patients also report feeling a comforting, massage-like sensation.

Which conditions are treated with shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy treatments are ideal for treating an array of injuries and chronic pain-causing conditions. Treatments have been proven to be beneficial for improving:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel pain
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Sports injuries
  • Joint stiffness
  • Scar formation
  • Sprained ankles

These innovative treatments are also restorative if you have a bone fracture or slow-healing joint fusions.

Do I need more than one shockwave therapy session?

Usually, it’s best to schedule three to five shockwave treatments each week for several weeks. Most patients start noticing an improvement shortly after their third treatment. Just because you’re feeling stronger and your pain is improving doesn’t mean you should stop your treatments though.

As long as you continue with your ESW treatment plan as recommended by Dr. Saeed, you're highly likely to have optimal success. Over 80% of treated patients report being nearly (or entirely) pain-free and having improved mobility after completing their shockwave sessions.

What should I expect during shockwave treatment?

Dr. Saeed uses the CuraMedix® DuoLith® SD1 TT for all EPAT treatments. This revolutionary system sends electromagnetically generated shockwaves deep down into soft tissues, so patients experience quick, lasting relief.

During your session, all you have to do is lie back and relax — you don’t need to do anything to prepare for treatments. Dr. Saeed applies a clear gel to your treatment area, which helps the applicator glide smoothly across your skin. The gel also ensures even delivery of shockwaves.

Most ESW treatments take about 15 minutes. If you’re having multiple areas treated during the same visit though, such as both of your heels, your visit could take longer.

If you have chronic foot or ankle pain, see how shockwave therapy treatments can help you. Book an evaluation at Red Rocks Foot & Ankle Center either online or over the phone.
